CALLS TO ACTION

Fund Our Schools

Myth: The Ford Conservative Government has funded education more than any other Government.

Fact: The Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives has tracked that education funding per student per school year is down $1,500 since the Conservatives took office in 2018. For a school with 700 students, that’s a funding cut of over $1 million. In a classroom of 24 kids, that’s $36,000 per class that is missing.

Demilitarize the Airshow

The call to demilitarize the airshow is the demand to end Canadian complicity in the Palestinian genocide. We must disrupt the global F-35 fight jet supply chain, in which over 100 Canadian companies profit.

EVENTS

Online Course: War, Peace, and Law

When: Mondays, August 6 to Sept 8

War and peace are not only political struggles – they are legal constructs that shape global power, foreign and domestic policy, and everyday life. War is prohibited under international law, and numerous constitutions, treaties, and legal systems restrict, renounce, or seek to prevent it. Yet exceptions persist, enforcement is selective, and legal norms are routinely ignored, undermined, or exploited. The result is a world where war is illegal on paper but legitimized and normalized in practice.

Science for Palestine

When: August 28th, 7pm
Where: Different Booklist, 779 Bathurst St.

In this issue we focus on the oppression and liberation of the Palestinian people through the lens of revolutionary science, technology, and healthcare. The innovation and ingenuity of Palestinians under the siege and occupation plays an important and often overlooked role in the vitality of their resistance. Nowhere is this more evident than the constant technical and political marvels in care practices that enable collective resistance through birthwork and nourishment for a besieged enclave at the brink of famine. Wahi Mohamad, co-writer of the article “Birthwork as Intifada: A Site of Resistance and Return,” will speak on the efforts of birthworkers in Gaza. A Q&A will follow her talk.

Workers’ Self-Management and the Struggle Against Neoliberalism

By Saeed Rahnema

The recent book by Marcelo Vieta, Workers’ Self-Management in Argentina: Contesting Neo-liberalism by Occupying Companies, Creating Cooperatives, and Recuperating Autogestion (Haymarket Books, Chicago, 2020), provides a wealth of information and analysis on the emergence of worker-run production cooperatives in Argentina’s crisis-ridden industries. It highlights workers’ prominent role in occupying and self-managing factories that were either shut down or on the brink of closure following the economic crisis of the 1990s. The book also offers fascinating examples of how these worker-managed units were established.

The Air Canada/CUPE Fight and the Bias of Law

By Harry Glasbeek

In Canada, there are only two parties to a collective agreement: the employer and the union certified as a bargaining agent for some of that employer’s workers. Workers are not parties to any collective agreement which covers them. The two parties are allowed to use their economic power to force the other into accepting an agreement. The resultant agreement is, comically, said to be a voluntary agreement. It is therefore enforceable.

Is Socialism Possible?

By Sam Gindin

When this essay by Sam Gindin was first published as “Socialism for Realists” in the Fall of 2018 in Catalyst, the left was at a crossroads. In the preceding years the idea of socialism seemed to finally be on the political map with several left electoral projects gaining traction in many western countries, and anti-capitalist agendas still gathering steam in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Despite these glimmers of hope, there was no overarching strategy, form of organization, or vision of a feasible socialist future.
