CALLS TO ACTION

Transit-only lanes now

Is your commute slow and unreliable? Buses and streetcars are spending more time in traffic as congestion worsens. This means being late for school, work, appointments and more.

Transit should be reliable, frequent, and fast. Toronto has a plan to get buses and streetcars moving with transit-only lanes and other measures, called RapidTO. But progress has been slow.

Your voice is needed to convince City Councillors to speed up TTC with transit priority measures! More transit-only lanes will increase ridership, reduce crowding, and help Toronto meet our 2040 Net Zero targets.

EVENTS

100 Years of Working Class Life

When: Friday July 18th, 7pm
Where: 31 Wellesley St E

Between 1917 and 1936 the Governments of Ontario and Canada produced hundreds of films on various subjects like farming techniques, industrial technology, vacations for the wealthy and “appropriate” workplace behaviour, among others. The Ontario Motion Picture Bureau, (OMPB) made educational films for “farmers, school children, factory workers and other classes”. The Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau, (CGMPB) advertised “Canada’s scenic attractions, agricultural resources and industrial development.”

Today these films provide a rare glimpse at how work, industry, gender, and class was understood and promoted by the state over 100 years ago. The narratives in the films avoided overt discussions of politics. Unions are invisible in these films, though they feature industries where unions were militant and active. Similarly, protests of any kind do not appear, yet in their absence, they have much to say about workplace struggle.

End the Genocide

When: July 19th, 3pm
Where: Spadina and Queen’s Quay

As Gaza faces relentless US-Zionist bombardment and genocide, the Zionist state’s violent escalation threatens our entire region. From Palestine to Lebanon to Syria to Yemen and Iran, our people are suffering under the imperial powers determined to maintain their domination of our lands.

This genocide is not only carried out with bombs and military power, but through the weaponization of so-called “aid.” The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US-Israeli-backed private scheme, masquerades as relief while creating militarized distribution zones guarded by tanks and snipers.

Fighting To Win

A Ten-Week Course for Union and Community Activists Facilitated by John Clarke, Former Organizer with the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP).

Unions and social movements today are operating in a very challenging situation. There is great economic uncertainty, the worsening impact of climate change and a global situation marked by the growing threat of conflict and war. When workers strike or communities under attack take to the streets, it seems that victories are much much harder to win, and past gains more difficult to defend.

This course will grapple with these questions by looking at the forms of exploitation and oppression that exist in society and the means by which the power structure acts to limit and contain our struggles. The course will move towards a discussion of how our movements can overcome the factors that hold them back and to fight to win!

Iran’s Response to the Israeli-US Invasion

By Mojtaba Mahdavi

Not many saw it coming. In just 12 days, the Middle East was once again plunged into a catastrophic war – from Israel’s massive surprise invasion of Iran, to the US’s unprecedented military strikes, and ultimately, a sudden call for a ceasefire. On June 24, 2025, US President Donald Trump surprized the world by calling for an immediate ceasefire in the escalating Israeli-American war on Iran. Trump’s Iran policy has shifted wildly over the past few months: initially insisting only on preventing Iran from weaponizing its nuclear program, then moving toward a hardline “zero enrichment” stance, and later threatening for regime change declaring, “if the current Iranian regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a regime change?” – MIGA, a provocative echo of his MAGA slogan!

BRICS: A Defensive Coalition Against the Empire

By Claudio Katz

The decline of the United States is the main explanation for the rise of the BRICS and allows us to place the dynamics of this emergence in a long-term context. It is important to precede any judgments on the expanded quintet with this diagnosis in order to avoid simple praise or condemnation of an alliance that is representative of the new multipolar scenario. The BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) have formed a coalition to set their own agenda, in opposition to Washington’s dictates.

BDS@20: Redefining International Solidarity

By Palestinian BDS National Committee

On July 9th, we marked a milestone in the liberation struggle of the Indigenous people of Palestine, as the Palestinian-led nonviolent, anti-racist BDS movement completes 20 years of grassroots organizing and building intersectional people power. This day will be remembered in history as the start of a principled, strategic, and creative process that has isolated Israel’s 77-year-old regime of settler-colonialism, apartheid, and military occupation at the grassroots and institutional level. It has redefined the meaning of solidarity with our struggle as starting with ending the complicity of states, corporations and institutions with this regime.

‘An Offer You Can’t Refuse’: Trump Sends Canada a Wake-up Call

By Sam Gindin

An all-too predictable pattern has emerged in US-Canada relations. US President Donald Trump makes Canada ‘an offer it can’t refuse’. What follows is a national gnashing of teeth, flag-waving, businesses and politicians going patriotic. The Canadian government then caves, lamenting we had ‘no choice’. What would it take to truly have a choice? An end to Trump’s on-again, off-again tariff ultimatums would obviously be welcome, but our previous ‘normal’ was never actually all that great, and it misses the larger point. Our quandary doesn’t lie in this or that policy conflict but something far deeper: unless we break out of this never-ending story by considerably delinking from the US – soberly, of course, and necessarily over time – we’re stuck with the fatalism of having ‘no choice’.
