CALLS TO ACTION

Fund Schools, Not Policing

Bill 33, ‘Supporting Children and Students Act, 2025′ was introduced at the Ontario Provincial Legislature by the Minister of Education Calandra. The proposed sweeping legislation makes it easier to take over School Boards and is part of a broader effort to undermine public education. Part of the wide-ranging legislation is to also centralize police power by concentrating police decision-making authority over School Boards, this undemocratic move ultimately mandates police(ing)-in-schools across the province of Ontario.

The Ford Government already knows that equitable access to education is a human right and structures of policing impede this access including the presence of police-in-schools and police-in-school programs and that this proposed legislation would be violating human rights, yet they are seeking to move forward with it.

Tell Carney: Starvation is a War Crime

The hunger crisis in Gaza has reached a breaking point. After months of Israel’s murderous siege and blockade of food supplies, an escalating number of people are now dying of starvation, including children. Meanwhile, Israeli soldiers repeatedly open fire on those who are desperately trying to access food, killing over 1,000 people in daily massacres at Israeli-run aid distribution sites. This is a human catastrophe on an unthinkable scale, playing out in real time. And it is entirely the predictable result of Israel’s deliberate, genocidal policies.

Earlier this year, PM Carney finally threatened to sanction Israel over its attacks on Gaza, and he imposed sanctions on two far-right Israeli ministers for inciting violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. On July 21, Canada joined over 20 countries in condemning Israel’s attacks on Palestinians and warning that they “are prepared to take further action.” However, Canada has failed to put these words into action and impose measures that can bring an end to Israel’s forced starvation of two million people.

Moncada Day

Moncada is a pivotal part of Cuba’s history due to the daring attack on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba on July 26, 1953. Led by Fidel Castro, a group of young revolutionaries attempted to overthrow Batista’s dictatorship, marking the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. Although the assault failed, it sparked a wave of resistance and became a rallying cry for the revolutionaries.

Celebration Of Cuba’s Rebellion Day

When: July 26th, 7pm
Where: Trinity St. Paul Church, 427 Bloor St W

On July 26, 1953, a group of brave young Cubans led by Fidel Castro attacked the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes garrisons, symbols of the tyranny and occupation of Cuba under the U.S. puppet regime of Batista. Although the attack was militarily defeated it raised the banner of struggle which led to the victory of the Cuba Revolution on Jan. 1, 1959.

This year’s anniversary celebration coincides with the ever-tightening genocidal economic, financial and trade blockade of Cuba, combined with the arbitrary naming of Cuba as a “state sponsor of terrorism” which aims to “suffocate the Cuban people into submission to no avail! The resistance of the Cuban people to defend the conquests of their revolution today is only matched with the heroic resistance of the Palestinian people against the ongoing genocide in Gaza and their thirst for liberation from occupation. Let’s celebrate our victories and resistance!

How Employers Have Become Part of a Persecution Campaign

By Harry Glasbeek

There are many accounts and criticisms of public-private partnerships (PPP’s) which are created to attain a government’s goal. Governments have internalized a market notion that profit-seeking leads to more efficiency and better outcomes. All too often this is not true. One aspect of these PPP arrangements is that government is expected to hold its private partner responsible for any failure to meet the formally agreed-upon terms. Governments are seen to be responsible to the public for the way in which a PPP is operating and delivering.

Real and Fake Antidotes to Trump’s Latest Tariffs, Seen from South Africa

By Patrick Bond

US President Donald Trump apparently aims to reassert his power to cause a full-blown economic catastrophe, perhaps reminiscent of 1930s-scale Make America Great Depression Again. The self-harm to his own MAGA lower-middle-class social base – especially consumers of cheap imports – will soon become evident when price inflation rises.

Housing a Basic Right or Playground for Global Capital?

By Paul Jay

Across Canada and the United States, housing is not treated as a basic human need. It has been reimagined as an investment vehicle, a speculative asset class, and a profit machine for institutional investors. This transformation, what housing experts call the financialization of housing, sits at the heart of the affordability crisis gripping cities across North America.
