CALLS TO ACTION
Reject Drone Warfare Testing in Downtown Ottawa
Ottawa and other Canadian towns and cities should never be used for drone warfare testing. Yet from November 24 to 28, the Canadian military, RCMP, and American officials are planning to use downtown Ottawa to test the kinds of killer drones wreaking terror now in Gaza, Ukraine, Somalia, Lebanon, and elsewhere.
We demand that these drone warfare tests be stopped and not rescheduled. We call on the Government of Canada and Ottawa City Council to end this planning for war and devote public resources to peaceful means of conflict resolution.

US Climate Policy in the Age of Trump
When: Friday Nov. 14th, 2pm
The arrival of the second Trump administration has had a deeply destabilizing effect on US climate and energy policies. The administration is moving forward with large-scale environmental policy rollbacks, including efforts to block implementation of President Biden’s signature climate laws and to withdraw from and even undermine international climate initiatives. State and local governments are again being thrust to centre stage as the key actors in US climate policy. The long-term outlook for climate action in the US remains uncertain at this point. Join us for a discussion of these developments and their implications for Canadian and global climate policy.

What Canadians Should Learn From Zohran’s Win in NYC
When: Wednesday, November 19th, 6:30pm
This call isn’t about celebrating an American win. It’s about asking why the NDP, Ontario Liberals, and Toronto’s progressive councillors refuse to learn from victories like Mamdani’s, Obama 2008, AOC 2018, or Stacey Abrams’ organizing blueprint. We’ll connect the dots between what works elsewhere and what’s broken here: the consultant class that profits from losing, the bias against learning from organizers of color, and the strategic laziness dressed up as “pragmatism.”

The Case for Sectoral Bargaining
When: Nov 19th, 7:30pm
This webinar examines whether expanding bargaining sector-wide can rebuild working-class power. Featuring Dr. Adam King and Dr. Sara Slinn.
In an era of multinational corporations, fissured workplaces, and gig economies, we ask if bargaining workplace by workplace is enough. Canadian unions, though resilient, remain fragmented, waging isolated battles. Elsewhere, sectoral bargaining sets robust standards across entire industries. This webinar examines what role expanding bargaining to the sector-wide level could play in rebuilding working-class power.

Crisis and Resistance

When: November 20th, 7pm
Ontario’s higher education sector faces a perfect storm of austerity, rising precarity, and eroding academic freedom. This has provoked a sustained wave of resistance, marked by near-continuous faculty, staff, and student-worker strikes over recent years, exemplified by the recent OPSEU support staff strike.
Learning from these Ontario struggles and from successful militant unionism in the United States, this event argues for a new strategic direction. We will explore the structural challenges and strategic issues that higher education workers face and consider the potential for a path forward based on commitments to wall-to-wall organization and new forms of sectoral solidarity and joint action.

Britain’s Left-Wing and Experiments in Democracy

By Tomaš Hucko
The biggest left-wing event in Great Britain – The World Transformed – was held regularly under the patronage of the Labour Party from 2016 onward. Since the party under the leadership of Keir Starmer adopted far-right rhetoric, the festival organisers have distanced themselves from Labour and this year organised the event in Manchester independently, in collaboration with several independent organisations. What does the festival reveal about the future of the British and, ultimately, the global left?

The WSIB ‘Surplus’: A Political Slush Fund

By Chris Grawey and Bonnie Heath
The corporate lobby is misleading the public when it suggests that the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) of Ontario is over-funded and that the money should be “returned” to business. Why? Because injured workers have been under-compensated by the WSIB in the billions of dollars. When “times are tough” at the WSIB, it is on the literal and figurative backs of injured and ill workers that the Board restores its financial health.

Harvesting Olives Under the Occupation

By Uri Weltmann
It is the olive harvest season. Palestinian communities are preparing for it, as they have for generations. This is not only economically vital, but also a practice rooted in their history, culture, and traditions. However, not all Palestinian farmers can simply go to the family plot and collect the olives growing on the trees. In dozens of villages across the Occupied West Bank, Palestinians face harassment, beatings, and sometimes even fatal attacks, carried out by extremist Israeli settlers.

Catherine Connolly Wins: An historic victory for the Irish left

By Paul Murphy
Catherine Connolly’s resounding victory in the Irish presidential election is a watershed moment. It is the first time that the left has won a majority of votes in a national election. This was not a narrow victory either; Catherine won the largest percentage (63%) and largest total vote (914k) of any presidential candidate in history. The combined forces of the political and media establishment threw everything they could at Connolly to try to stop the momentum behind her campaign.

Political Sovereignty and Elbows Up

By Harry Glasbeek
How lucky were the Liberals when the last federal election season began? Very. Twin perceived threats came to their assistance.
Like all parties in trouble, they dumped their leader, Justin Trudeau, and selected another, Mark Carney. They crafted an image of Carney as a man who had dined and wined with the rich and makers and shakers of the world, as a canny businessman having served on the boards of several major corporations, and as a sound economist who had contributed to the public good when he served in the prestigious roles of governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.
