CALLS TO ACTION
Call on Canada to recognize femicide
Since 2020, there have been at least 580 women and girls killed by men in acts of gender-related violence across Canada. This is called femicide. We, the Canadian Femicide Observatory for Justice and Accountability (CFOJA), are calling on the Canadian Federal Government to officially recognize femicide and to work toward including femicide in the Criminal Code of Canada.
To spotlight the scale of this crisis, we created Too True Crime, a 580-episode podcast series sharing the real stories of every woman and girl we know of who has been killed by femicide in Canada since 2020. Each episode honours a life taken, revealing the relentless regularity of femicide in this country. All 580 episodes are available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
We urge the Canadian Federal Government to take definitive and decisive action by officially recognizing femicide and to work toward including femicide in the Criminal Code of Canada. This is the first step in preventing violence against women and girls.

Canada has long downplayed its role in arming Israel, claiming it only issues a limited number of export permits, permits the government now says it has suspended. But this report exposes a far deeper complicity: Canada is a critical enabler of the United States’ billions of dollars in military aid and sales to Israel annually.
For the first time, this report exposes a pipeline of military goods flowing from Canada to Israel via the US, facilitated by a deadly loophole in Canadian law.

Join workers fighting for unpaid wages. Members of the Workers’ Action Centre who are owed over $400,000 in unpaid wages will be calling on the government to do their job! Protect workers from employers who steal their wages.
Over 60% of workers face wage theft. Just in the last ten years, the Ministry of Labour assessed employers owed $200-million to workers. We know that this is just a small fraction of wages owed as many don’t know how to file a complaint or just have to try to get another job so bills can get paid.

International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
When: November 29th, 2pm
Where: Bay and Front St
The people of the world have stood with Palestine for over two years, and we’re not stopping. Since the ceasefire announcement, Israel has massacred hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza, attacked the West Bank, and continued its abuse, torture and killing of Palestinian prisoners.
A two-way arms embargo is our movement’s unchanged demand, the only guarantee of ending Israel’s mass murder of Palestinians and systematic theft of our land.

PYM Course on Imperialism
When: December 2nd to 11th, 6:30pm
From December 2-11, PYM will host a hybrid course on US imperialism at the People’s Forum. This course, America’s Forever Wars in the Middle East, will equip participants with an essential understanding of US imperialism, Israel’s role within it, and its consequences for working people in the US and around the world.
Over the course of 4 sessions, we will illuminate how it is the imperialist system, and not just the ideological positions of any one politician in office, that keeps America at war and invested in genocide and the destabilization of the Middle East.
Without understanding the imperialist system that underlies the ongoing drive for war, and that has attempted to destroy the Palestinian people and those who stand with them, we cannot understand how to confront it.

The roundtable discussion will include lessons on the policing of protest, organizing amidst repression, and the struggle for a free Palestine. Then we’ll hand the stage over to the DJs and dance the night away!

Three Dimensions of Militarism in the Climate Crisis

By Patrick Bigger
War, famously, is the pursuit of politics by other means. Cliche though it may be, the impacts of war and militarism are often overlooked by social movements focusing on formal political processes. And this is understandable: we cannot always have our minds on military spending and the structural conditions that reinforce the highly militarized, violent realities we are collectively living through. So many of us are already stretched thin by struggles for affordable housing, climate action, racial justice, criminal punishment reform, equitable healthcare, improved public transportation, and countless other issues.

$50-bn in Subsidies has Failed to Secure EV Jobs

By Doug Nesbitt
On October 16, 2023, it was all smiles for the cameras in Loyalist Township where politicians and corporate executives gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony to build a new $2.761-billion Electric Vehicle battery parts plant. Loyalist Township, located next door to the Kingston, Ontario, is named after the Loyalists who, 250 years ago, sided with the British King against the American Revolution and crossed the St. Lawrence River to settle in Upper Canada.

What We Forgot About Socialism

By Kristen R. Ghodsee
Twenty years ago in November of 2005, Duke University Press published my first book:
The Red Riviera: Gender, Tourism, and Postsocialism on the Black Sea. Produced in the wake of socialism’s global collapse and the riot of Western triumphalism that ensued, I deployed both qualitative and quantitative methods to advance a simple, but unpopular, argument: for most people in the former Soviet bloc, capitalism sucked.

Lessons from the Zapatistas

The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education is proud to host Lia Pinheiro Barbosa and Peter Rosset for the online launch of their new book
Lessons from the Zapatistas: From Armed Insurgency to People’s Autonomy (Fernwood Publishing).
Lessons from the Zapatistas is essential reading for anyone interested in liberation, democracy and radical social transformation. It tells the story of the Zapatista insurgency, including the contemporary breadth and depth of their territorial autonomy, tracing how an Indigenous uprising burst forth from southern Mexico’s Lacandon Jungle to stage the 21st century’s first and most electrifying example of autonomy in action.
