Build Social Housing Now!
Millions of Canadians are struggling with rising rents, unaffordable housing, and the threat of eviction. With over 61% of low-income renters facing financial hardship and social housing making up only 3.5% of total housing stock, the federal government must act now to ensure all Canadians have access to affordable, secure, and healthy homes.
The federal government wants to efficiently build affordable housing via Build Canada Homes (BCH). But what could be more inefficient than enabling corporations to destroy 15 affordable housing units for every affordable housing unit built? That’s exactly what’s being done by not protecting Canada’s existing affordable housing with rent control, banning fixed term leases, and other necessary tenant protections.

Trump is Looking to Consolidate his Populist Base

ILNA: During his second presidential term, US President Donald Trump raised tariffs to an unprecedented level. In your view, are Trump’s tariff policies driven more by economic considerations or political motives?
Sam Gindin (SG): Trump is looking to consolidate his populist base without challenging corporate power or addressing inequalities. The ‘external’ sector offers a way of doing this. Cut immigration appeals to American nativism and resentments about the alleged economic costs of immigrants. And raise tariffs to generate revenues from abroad, protect the domestic market, and pressure capital to invest in the US.

The Return of the Wildcat Strike?

By Carlo Fanelli
In a Canadian tradition as old as maple syrup, governments of all stripes have long leveraged the law to curb strikes, turning what were once exceptional interventions into routine practice. The history of criminalizing workers’ resistance stretches back well over a century, with unions facing criminal conspiracy charges, injunctions, fines, and even jail time for acts of collective resistance.

Unifor and UE Pass Resolutions for an Arms Embargo

The ground is shifting in global popular opinion against Israel’s war and genocide on Gaza. But western states, notably the US, Britain and Canada, remain complicit in arming and assisting the Israeli military in its human rights violations, war crimes, and mass starvation of the Palestinian population in Gaza. These states are all but silent on the ethnic cleansing and settlement-building in the West Bank, and the apartheid policies across the entire state of Israel and Occupied Territories. It is important that we continue and redouble our solidarity demonstrations with Palestine and deepen the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) campaign across our unions, workplaces, and communities.

Lessons and Legacy of Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution

It has been 26 years since Hugo Chávez first assumed the presidency of Venezuela in 1999. Since then, Venezuela has gone through enormous ups and downs, and mostly downs since Nicolas Maduro took over from Chavez following his death in 2013. Given Venezuela’s current challenging situation, what lessons can be drawn from the Bolivarian Revolution for future revolutionary projects? And what is the meaning of the Bolivarian project in the larger context of Latin American politics in the 21st century more generally? What do these lessons mean for socialist organizing and activism today? Presentation by Gregory Wilpert.
