Honduras: Garifuna Communities Under Attack

The situation in Honduras is getting heavier by the day, with escalating threats against the lives, land, and territories of the country’s peasant, Indigenous, and Afro-Indigenous communities by right-wing forces.

In July, five members of the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH) were arrested during a violent eviction in the Garifuna community of San Juan, in the municipality of Tela, on the Caribbean coast of Honduras. While the individuals were released, they are facing criminal charges for “aggravated usurpation” of their own territory. This criminalization is occurring in a context of rising violence against Garifuna communities.

The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education is very pleased to present Memories Of Underdevelopment (1968) as the second film in the new FilmSocial series on Cuba. It is more important than ever to keep attention on Cuba and the crisis it is going through from US aggression.

Memories Of Underdevelopment was directed by the prolific Cuba director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea. It is Gutiérrez Alea’s most famous work and arguably Cuba’s most acclaimed film. It was elected one of the best film’s of all time in the Sight & Sound 2012 poll.

Save Public healthcare

Our sister coalition in Alberta – the Friends of Medicare – has asked us all to help stop Alberta’s government from ending single tier public health care in Canada. They are working their hardest in Alberta but we need to be helping across the country. The situation is extremely urgent. As of Sept. 1 Alberta will bring in U.S. private health insurance and start to sell access to two-tier medicare, pushing most people back in line, moving physicians out of the public system to serve those who can pay, and bringing in the private insurance companies (which are currently banned under Canada’s medicare laws). The latter is, of course, the goal of the legislation.

This course will approach these questions and others through An Introduction to the Three Volumes of Karl Marx’s Capital by Michael Heinrich, one of most approachable and understandable guides through Marx’s masterwork. Capital remains the most important work of critical analysis of capitalism in history, through its exploration of the economic principles that govern capitalism, and the problems faced by workers and society.

Artificial Intelligence – part 2

Tech leaders want us to believe that AI is an overwhelming force that cannot be stopped; that our only option is to make peace with it. As Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO, told attendees at his 2026 University of Arizona commencement speech: “When someone offers you a seat on the rocket ship, you do not ask which seat. You just get on.” Not surprisingly, his speech was met with loud and steady boos by the graduates.

New Brunswick’s Energy Contradictions

On May 28, the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board approved construction of a new gas- and diesel-fired generating plant. It will be built in Centre Village, a small hamlet in the municipality of Tantramar in the southeast of the province. The move surprised no one, and that is both a shame and part of the problem. The decision illustrates a series of wider issues with New Brunswick energy policy, not least its isolation from even a measure of democratic control.

Mass Incarceration in El Salvador

In March 2022 the Nayib Bukele administration in El Salvador invoked an emergency measure called a “state of exception” in reaction to a spike in gang violence. Under the pretext of protecting public order, this measure suspends freedoms of assembly, association, and expression, as well as fundamental rights surrounding arrest and detention. These include the right of habeas corpus, the right to be informed of the reasons for detention, access to legal assistance, and numerous guarantees of due process.
