Honour 2030 and 2035 emissions targets

Whereas:

– Canadians are concerned about the changing climate and the resulting droughts, wildfires and floods caused by a warming planet;

– The federal government is not addressing the climate crisis in ways that will fundamentally prevent further greenhouse gas emissions;

– It is necessary to break through this climate silence with clear, honest, and consistent public communication grounded in science and lived experience…

We call upon the Government of Canada to honour and ensure Canada’s 2030 and 2035 emissions targets and strengthen the policies that make them achievable for the love of our children and grandchildren.

OPSEU Strike (week 11)

Doug Ford has underfunded our community services to the point of crisis — and it’s pushing workers into poverty.

OPSEU members are now in the ninth week of their ongoing strike. These workers provide critical frontline services that our communities rely on. Stability, dignity, and decent wages for workers will mean better services for all.

Community Fundraiser for Cuba

Where: Christie Pits park, Community Oven (next to the skate park)

Together we’re raising funds to purchase an EcoFlow portable power station, helping provide backup electricity during frequent power outages for everyday essentials like refrigeration, charging phones, and powering fans.

Shutdown Maple MAGA

When: August 8th, 12pm
Where: Queen’s Park

On August 8th, a group called canada first, led by Joe Anidjar, will be protesting at Queen’s Park. This group has shown up in Toronto repeatedly over the last few years to spew white nationalism, white and christian supremacy, covid denialism and to demand that racialized immigrants be deported, but we and many others have stopped them, embarrassed them and sent them packing multiple times before. We are gathering to do this again, and to show Joe that this type of racism is not allowed here.

Palestinian Cinema Under the Stars

Where: Christie Pits Park, 750 Bloor St. W.

Come early, and join us for a vibrant evening featuring a lively Souq (market) featuring a range of Palestinian products and delicious Palestinian food vendors before night falls and we settle in to watch Palestinian cinema under the stars.

At sunset the screening will start with the short film What Situation Exactly? directed by Wadee’ Hamad, based in Jenin, Palestine. The film juxtaposes the neutralized language used to describe Palestine in the West with the lived realities of Palestinians under illegal occupation.

Summer Practice School

When: Sundays (1-4pm), July 12 to Sept 20 Biweekly

Alliance of Workers and Students (AWAS) is launching a summer series of hands-on trainings to build practical skills for actions and organizing. Sessions will include security culture at actions, street medic, legal observing (LO), Know Your Rights (KYR), chant leading, street tactics, and more.

The goal is to build collective capacity across the city, so more of us feel confident stepping into key roles at actions.

Sessions will run bi-weekly on weekends and be led in collaboration with experienced organizers and groups.

Palestinian Journalists Week of Action

As we approach one year since Anas al-Sharif’s martyrdom and his final message — “I entrust you with Palestine… I entrust you not to be silenced by chains, nor held back by borders” — we announce a week of action, August 10th through the 16th.

We will honor Anas and all martyred Palestinian journalists, confronting the reality that the murder of journalists on the ground was an intentional attempt to silence the voices of truth, who faced certain death to expose the crimes Zionism commits against our people.

Mass Incarceration in El Salvador

What is going on in El Salvador and how does this matter to Canada?

In March 2022 the Nayib Bukele administration in El Salvador invoked an emergency measure called a “state of exception” in reaction to a spike in gang violence.

Under the pretext of protecting public order, this measure suspends freedoms of assembly, association, and expression, as well as fundamental rights surrounding arrest and detention. These include the right of habeas corpus, the right to be informed of the reasons for detention, access to legal assistance, and numerous guarantees of due process.

Prisoners’ Justice Day

Mark 51 years of organizing behind and beyond bars to end deaths in custody and other prison injustices.

Prisoners’ Justice Day events are taking place across the country to commemorate the lives lost to human caging and to stand in solidarity with imprisoned people who are demanding an end to draconian conditions of confinement.

Hosted by El Jones and Desmond Cole, the online broadcast will feature demands from inside, interviews with criminalized people and community organizers, as well as live and recorded footage from local PJD events from coast-to-coast.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the How to Organize Your Workplace course is for you!

Over two days participants will learn what it takes to go from zero organization at work to a functioning committee of coworkers that can take on the boss and win! Together we will learn and practice the ideas, methods, and skills necessary to build power at work. The course will also feature a general discussion of unions: strengths and weaknesses, potentials and limits, and why organizing at work should be a top priority for those who want a better world.

Diminishing Returns: A Review of Anton Jäger’s Hyperpolitics

In his Prison Notebooks, Antonio Gramsci, repurposing military terminology, formulated the distinction between “wars of maneuver” and “wars of position” in the ongoing class struggle between capital and labour that marks capitalist societies. A war of maneuver denotes actions akin to a rapid assault or open battle on the field of hegemonic struggle. Traditionally defined, revolutionary uprisings, coups d’état, industrial strikes, and direct actions each represent their own war of maneuver. The war of position, on the other hand, is a metaphor for the all-important institutional and cultural backdrop against which more visible maneuvers for power are launched.

Climate-Driven Wildfires Sweep Across Canada

Devastating wildfires are raging across Canada and they are clearly a manifestation of the rapidly intensifying global climate disaster we are now living through. As communities are being evacuated, overstretched and under-resourced firefighting systems are being tested to the limit. Yet, even in the face of this, no plan to curtail carbon emissions is being developed. On the contrary, Canada’s political establishment has united around a plan to develop massive fossil-fuel projects that can only worsen this already desperate situation.

ETFO is Hiring

Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) is looking for an experienced individual to join a three-person team of Organizers. This one-year position will support the mobilization and engagement of ETFO’s 84,000 teachers and educators in Ontario.
