Snail Mail for Social Justice

Parliamentarians regularly ignore emails, but physical mail shows someone cares enough to spend the time to write something out and pop it into the mailbox. This year has seen the emergence of snail mail letter clubs, a reminder of our special relationship to sending and receiving real, tangible pieces of mail.

Please send a handwritten letter to grant visas to Doaa Nashwan and all Palestinian visa applicants from Gaza who were promised a lifeline to Canada in December 2023 but who have been denied any mercy, flexibility, and compassionate care. There’s no postage required! It’s a perfect summertime activity while sitting outside at the beach, under a shady tree in the park, or at your kitchen table.

OPSEU Strike (week 10)

Doug Ford has underfunded our community services to the point of crisis — and it’s pushing workers into poverty.

OPSEU members are now in the ninth week of their ongoing strike. These workers provide critical frontline services that our communities rely on. Stability, dignity, and decent wages for workers will mean better services for all.

Summer Practice School

When: Sundays (1-4pm), July 12 to Sept 20 Biweekly

Alliance of Workers and Students (AWAS) is launching a summer series of hands-on trainings to build practical skills for actions and organizing. Sessions will include security culture at actions, street medic, legal observing (LO), Know Your Rights (KYR), chant leading, street tactics, and more.

The goal is to build collective capacity across the city, so more of us feel confident stepping into key roles at actions.

Sessions will run bi-weekly on weekends and be led in collaboration with experienced organizers and groups.

One Year Later: Legal Victory Ride

On July 30, 2025, the Ontario Superior Court ruled in Cycle Toronto v. Ontario that the province’s attempt to remove 19 km of protected bike lanes was reckless and arbitrary and violated Canadians’ Charter rights under Section 7. Far from establishing a positive right to bike lanes, the court’s decision affirmed that governments cannot take actions such as removing existing protected bike lanes that knowingly increase danger without breaching fundamental Charter protections.

Join us to celebrate this victory and stand up against this ongoing pattern of provincial interference and undermining of local democracy.

FilmSocial: I Am Cuba

Imagination – A Manifesto

Are you tired of the collective imaginaries being shaped by the techno-oligarchs? Do you want to suspend your disbelief for few hours and imagine an alternative? We will be reading Ruha Benjamin’s “Imagination: A Manifesto” to help us get unstuck as “imagination is a field of struggle, not an ephemeral afterthought that we have the luxury to dismiss or romanticize”.

Tech Workers Coalition a chapter-based, all-volunteer, and worker-led organization for tech workers around the world. We believe that a tech worker is anyone who is involved in the production and maintenance of digital technology, whether you are a bike courier working at a food delivery app service, a designer, a software engineer, a product owner, a data labeller or a content moderator.

Heatwaves: Anger and Sadness. And hope, despite everything

In less than two months, Europe has been hit by three heatwaves that are exceptional in terms of their early onset, intensity, duration and geographical extent. The health impacts are numerous and dramatic: respiratory problems caused in particular by ozone formation (from nitrogen oxide emissions from internal combustion engines – ozone levels exceeded safe limits in June for 300 out of 450 million Europeans); cardiovascular events; infectious diseases; acute kidney failure; air pollution from forest fire smoke.

A tribute to Dr. Nouman Ali

It’s a measure of the vitality and stature of a person that, when you attend their funeral, you fully expect them to walk in, relishing the crowd, full of life, greetings all around, and ready to participate. And you’re disappointed that they missed the occasion. That’s how I felt at the Kearney Lake Mosque funeral of Nouman Ali, our dear departed comrade. I could see him with his reflective vest, helmet and mirror (he was an avid cyclist) holding a sign he had produced denouncing one or other Israeli depredation in Gaza. How could he not be there? How could he not be with us?
