CALLS TO ACTION

Canada should review all the companies on the UN list

The UN has provided an updated list of businesses associated with illegal Israeli settlements (aka War Crimes).

We ask that Canada review all the companies on the UN list that are in countries outside of Israel, and consider any financial transactions, be these be imports or exports, investments, subsidiaries or other relationships, and take immediate steps to warn these businesses of their complicity with war crimes. We also ask that the Canadian government hold Canadian corporations who do not end their business relationships with listed entitites accountable.

Fighting to Win

When: Nov 12 to Dec 2

Unions and social movements today are operating under incredibly dire circumstances. There is great economic uncertainty and we confront the worsening impact of climate change as well as a global situation marked by the growing threat of conflict and war. When workers strike or communities under attack take to the streets, it seems that victories are much harder to win and past gains more difficult to defend.

This course will grapple with these questions by looking at the forms of exploitation and oppression that exist in society and the means by which the power structure acts to limit and contain our struggles. The course will move towards a discussion of how our movements can overcome the factors that hold them back and fight to win!

Amazon Is Deploying AI to Spy on Its Workers

By Jonathan Rosenblum

The 18th-century notion of the panopticon – a circular prison design with a guard station in the middle, allowing a single officer to enforce discipline by keeping watch over all the prisoners – has become real in the 21st century through AI-driven surveillance against workers: it’s the Amazon warehouse. It should be no surprise that the company that harnessed technology to create a vast, $2.7-trillion empire would employ the same sophistication to enforce workplace discipline and tamp down insurgent unionization efforts.

Ensuring that the Unions’ Bark will be Worse than their Bite

By Harry Glasbeek

A collective bargaining regime which does not permit a workers’ union to conduct a strike is not collective bargaining at all. It amounts to collective begging. Employers are in favour of such a regime. They can be kind to beggars or not. It is their choice. They like that. The Mark Carney government wants to make investors and employers happy. It says so all the time and now is acting on these declarations.
