CALLS TO ACTION

Protect Workers’ Right to Free and Fair Bargaining

For the third time in 7 months, CUPW is subject to government intervention, stripping away their right to free and fair collective bargaining with Canada Post.

Patty Hajdu, the Minister for Jobs and Families, has ordered the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to proceed with a forced vote on Canada Post’s May 28 offers to Urban Postal Operations (UPO) and Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier (RSMC) postal workers.

Continued government interference has not only skewed this round of collective bargaining, but it now interferes with CUPW’s right as the sole and exclusive bargaining agent for its members.

Tell your Member of Parliament that you want the Minister and Government to:
• Halt its forced vote,
• Allow Federal Mediators to assist in the resumption of meaningful bargaining, and;
• Publicly commit that it will not interfere with workers’ rights in the future to tilt the playing field in favour of employers.

FilmSocial: Smiley Face

When: Wednesday July 2nd, 6:45pm
Where: Eyesore Cinema, 1176 Bloor St W.
Free/PWYC

The Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education is very pleased to present Smiley Face as the latest installment in the ongoing FilmSocial series.

Not very often do stoner comedies bring in The Communist Manifesto, but there also aren’t very many directors like Gregg Araki, who is able to successfully combine the absurd with the political. Smiley Face follows Jane (Anna Faris), a struggling but perpetually stoned actress in L.A., as she tries to complete a busy day of tasks, such as paying her electric bill, going to an audition and buying more weed. Her day is made that much harder when she unknowingly eats an entire tray of pot-laced cupcakes.

The result is a hilarious series of misadventures in the same vein as movies like After Hours and The Big Lebowski. Jane’s day starts to get really out of control when she gets her hands on a first edition copy of The Communist Manifesto.

Atmospheric Colonisation and Ecological Imperialism in the World System

By Jason Hickel

One of the most damaging myths about the global ecological crisis is that humans as such are responsible for it. In reality, the crisis is being driven by our particular economic system, capitalism, and is caused almost entirely by the states and corporations of the Global North (the imperial core), primarily to the benefit of their elites.

By Owen Schalk

On June 13, Israel launched an illegal and unprovoked attack against Iran, targeting government facilities, officials, and civilian areas. Israel’s justification is an old and repeatedly disproven one: that Iran is developing a nuclear weapon with the intention of destroying Israel and even the wider Western world.
