When: while the strike is on

Doug Ford has underfunded our community services to the point of crisis — and it’s pushing workers into poverty.

OPSEU members are now in the ninth week of their ongoing strike. These workers provide critical frontline services that our communities rely on. Stability, dignity, and decent wages for workers will mean better services for all.

Re-reading Ghassan Kanafani Today

When: August 20th, 7pm
Where: Another Story Bookshop, 315 Roncesvalles Ave

Even before his assassination in 1972, Ghassan Kanafani was one of the Palestinian liberation movements most influential leaders and intellectuals. Though initially known outside Arabic reading publics as a novelist, recent translations of his works of political analysis, culture critique and revolutionary history have made Kanafani’s interventions accessible to a much broader public.

Join us for this event with Hazem Jamjoum, one of Kanafani’s translators, for a discussion on the life and work of this revolutionary intellectual, and what they might contribute to our struggles against fascism and empire today.

Tribute to Palestinian Journalists

When: Saturday, August 22nd, 2pm-6pm

On Aug 10, 2025, the Israeli occupation forces assassinated Anas Al-Sharif and five other journalists: Mohamed Qreiqeh, Moamen Aliwa, Mohammed Nofal, Ibrahim Zaher, and Mohemd Al-Khalidi. This targeting of Anas and his colleagues follows a long history of attacks against Palestinian journalists aimed at silencing Palestinian voices.

During the Gaza genocide, which continues to this day, over 270 journalists have been martyred with many more all over Palestine, Lebanon and the region. Over 42 journalists are currently imprisoned facing the worst conditions. These attempts at killing the truth will not succeed, we will not let the voices of Gaza die.

When: Saturday, August 22nd, 4pm
Where: The Public Studio, 58 Lansdowne Ave

Let the Children Learn is a volunteer-run, one-day pop-up art exhibition bringing together local creatives who believe art can do more than decorate walls; it can build community, spark conversation, and help children access education.

Every piece in this show has been generously donated by participating artists. 100% of proceeds go directly to Modern Childhood School, a tuition-free school rebuilt through mutual aid in southern Gaza that currently serves approximately 600 students.

This exhibition brings together artists working across a huge range of mediums and experience levels, from first-time exhibitors to established makers, all responding to themes of hope, resilience, childhood, learning, imagination, community, and Palestinian culture.

Wheatpasting for Grassy

When: August 24th, 6pm
Where: 720 Spadina Ave

Between the 1960s and 1970s, the Dryden Mill in North-Western Ontario dumped 9,000 kilograms of mercury into the English-Wabigoon River upstream from Grassy Narrows First Nation, or Asubpeeschoseewagong Netum Anishinabek. Residents of Grassy have been suffering from mercury poisoning ever since, and the Dryden Mill continues to operate and pollute the area to this day.

The community has fought back in countless ways over the decades (including having the longest running blockade in Canadian history!), and every two years, community members and leaders of Grassy Narrows travel 1,700km to come to Toronto for the bi-annual River Run Rally to demand justice.

Protest Doug Ford

When: August 29th, 1pm
Where: 111 Wellesley St W

Doug Ford has consistently shown he’s not on the people’s side. It’s time to stand up for our rights and for those who cannot. On this website, you’ll find all of the dates, times, and locations for future protests against Doug Ford and his agenda.

Change doesn’t happen quickly, but if we all stand together and say a collective “that’s enough”, it gets harder and harder for them to continue with what they are doing.

National Exclusionism: A Global Problem and the Spanish Case

By Gabriel Gustavo Núñez Pérez

For Canadian readers, the names Frente Obrero (FO) and Reconstrucción Comunista (RC) probably evoke nothing. Organizations that wrap a reactionary program in the rhetoric of Marxism-Leninism tend to flourish in the relative obscurity that comes from operating outside large media circuits; that nobody knows them beyond their borders is part of their very reason for being. But the form this phenomenon takes in Spain is sufficiently articulated, and sufficiently documented in the organization’s own texts, to deserve international attention.

Wildfires and Floods are Devastating Communities

By Union of BC Indian Chiefs

Today [Aug 9], on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, the Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) calls on the governments of Canada and Alberta to immediately halt efforts to advance the proposed West Coast Oil Pipeline. This proposal threatens both the inherent rights of First Nations and accelerates the expansion of the fossil fuel industry at a time when communities across the country are already experiencing devastating climate disasters. Canada cannot claim to respect Indigenous rights while ignoring free, prior, and informed consent, nor can it claim climate leadership while approving infrastructure designed to expand oil production.
