CALLS TO ACTION

Tell York Paramedics to reinstate Katherine Grzejszczak Now!

On June 20, York Region Paramedics fired Katherine Grzejszczak for expressing solidarity with Palestine.

Katherine has been a frontline paramedic with York Regional Municipality since 2010. She was the president of her CUPE local for 6 years and is currently a member of CUPE Ontario’s executive board.

Days prior, Katherine had posted on Facebook criticizing Israel’s mass slaughter of children and civilians, including paramedics, and called for workers to join an anti-war rally. Zionists saw the post and encouraged followers to contact York Paramedics and complain.

EVENTS

Repeal Bill 5 Rally

When: July 3rd, 4pm
Where: MPP David Smith’s constituency office, Scarborough Centre, 2063 Lawrence Ave E

MPP David Smith voted in favour of passing Bill 5— a dangerous bill that guts the Endangered Species Act, removes protections for green spaces, workers’ safety and regulation, and violates Indigenous Treaties. Bill 5 gives Ford and the Provincial government unchecked power to seize land, and David Smith allowed it to happen.

David Smith represents community hubs like Thompson Park, and the Birkdale Ravine, yet supports policies that threaten their existence. As former Trustee for Toronto District School Board Ward 17, he should know that this legislation will impact young people the most, stripping them of their right to access clean air, water, and green space.

Bill 5 Explained

When: July 9th, 7pm

This free webinar will focus on the implications of Bill 5, which the Government of Ontario passed on June 4, 2025. Specifically, we will present what the Bill means for Indigenous rights, environmental protections and democratic transparency.

The sweeping bill amends several pieces of legislation and creates new laws. Most significantly, it eliminates the Endangered Species Act and replaces it with a much weaker and performative Species Conservation Act. It also creates the Special Economic Zones Act, which allows Cabinet to exempt projects from all provincial laws, regulations and municipal bylaws with no guardrails or criteria.

Arundhati Roy Toronto Book Launch

Where: Convocation Hall, 31 King’s College Circle
Tickets $15 general admission, or $50 Book and Ticket.

In her first work of memoir, Roy explores the fierce, beautiful, and complicated bond with her mother, Mary Roy—an unflinching educator, activist, and force of nature who shaped Arundhati’s life as a woman, a writer, and a political thinker. From a rebellious childhood in Kerala to international literary acclaim, Roy’s journey is told with the poetic intensity and fearless honesty that have defined her career.

This is more than a conversation about a book—it’s an intimate exploration of love, grief, memory, and liberation. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear from one of the most powerful literary voices of our time as she reflects on identity, artistry, and the indelible mark of a mother’s presence.

Culture as a Pedagogical Battlefield in the Fight Against Authoritarianism

By Henry A. Giroux

On June 6, resistance ignited in the streets of Los Angeles to confront the Trump regime’s brutal campaign against immigrants, enforced by the brutality of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and the machinery of mass deportation. In a chilling escalation, Trump branded the protesters “insurrectionists” and threatened the use of military force – turning dissent into a crime and protest into a pretext for repression. Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff, called Los Angeles “occupied territory,” adding, “We’ve been saying for years this is a fight to save civilization.”

The Deadly Tango of Netanyahu-Khamenei

By Saeed Rahnema

Exactly ten years ago, in an article titled “The Political Tango of Netanyahu and Khamenei” published in Open Canada, I noted that although there may seem to be no two political leaders who hate each other more than these two, at the same time, they are deeply reliant on one another to cover up the chaos they’ve each created within their own countries. Now, ten years later, this dance continues – still with the same theme, but now with a much more dangerous and deadly rhythm, and for Khamenei at least, it has reached a decisive turning point.

No, You Aren’t Hallucinating, the Corporate Plan for AI is Dangerous

By Martin Hart-Landsberg

Big tech is working hard to sell us on artificial intelligence (AI), in particular what is called “artificial general intelligence” (AGI). At conferences and in interviews corporate leaders describe a not-too-distant future when AI systems will be able to do everything for everyone, producing a world of plenty for all. But they warn, that future depends on our willingness to provide them with a business-friendly regulatory and financial environment.

The Fight to Stop Big Oil In Congo

François Kamate interviewed by Alexandria Shaner

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is at a critical turning point: while violent conflicts persist in the east of the country, the relaunch of oil and gas block auctions risks worsening instability, steamrolling human rights, and jeopardizing the country’s environmental commitments – turning the world’s largest terrestrial carbon sink into a massive carbon bomb.
