CALLS TO ACTION

Oppose Bill C-9

Whereas:

– Section 2 (b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;
– Section 2 (c) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees freedom of peaceful assembly;
– Section 1 (e) of the Canadian Bill of Rights guarantees freedom of assembly and association;
– Article 12:1 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples upholds the right of Indigenous peoples to practise their own ceremonies, such as the Round Dance, in public spaces;
– Organizations including the Canadian Civil Liberties Association have opposed Bill C-9 and related legislation as a threat to democratic institutions and processes, unrelated to the curtailment of hate speech; and
– Section 319 of Canada’s Criminal Code already names public or wilful incitement of hatred or antisemitism as indictable offences

We, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the House of Commons to 1. Oppose Bill C-9, the Combatting Hate Act, and any future limitation of the right to protest…

The Radical Labour of Care

When: Tuesday March 24th, 2pm
Where: George Brown Polytechnic, 200 King St. E., St James Campus, Room SJA 455E

How can we reimagine the systems that continue to fail the city’s most vulnerable people through radical approaches to care? In an increasingly hostile and unaffordable city where housing, healthcare, and other basic needs are increasingly inaccessible, this Transformation Café explores the everyday/night labour of care work through decolonial and intersectional feminist perspectives.

Featuring Claire Dion Fletcher, an Indigenous midwife, leader, and educator; Lorraine Lam, a crisis outreach worker, case manager, and advocate in Toronto’s Downtown East; and Grissel Orellana, the Program Director of the Latinx Womyn’s Program at the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape, this conversation will examine how panelists intervene in state cruelty by identifying the gaps and harms within systems that claim to provide care, and how to build practices of mutual aid, community safety, and collective survival.

Closing the Loophole on Canada’s Complicity in Genocide and War Crimes

By Laurel M. Owns

On Wednesday, March 11, MPs will vote on Bill C-233, the No More Loopholes Act. This bill, which is sponsored by NDP MP Jenny Kwan and jointly seconded by Liberal MPs Fares Al Soud and Nate Erskine-Smith, NDP MP Leah Gazan, and Green MP Elizabeth May, would prevent Canadian arms manufacturers from taking advantage of a ‘loophole’ that currently allows them to ship weapons and weapons parts to Israel, as well as numerous other countries, through the US.

Trolling the Law Books to Find New Ways to Shut Down Critics of Israel

By Larry Haiven

Outrage and resistance are growing against a vicious campaign to muzzle political speech and action. That campaign aims to silence and punish public criticism of Israel’s actions, especially the genocide in Gaza and the ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. Desperate at their inability any longer to defend Israel’s indefensible activities through traditional propaganda techniques (Hebrew word “Hasbara”), Canadian pro-Israel organizations and the lawyers who work with them have turned to attempting outright silencing (Hebrew word “Hashtakah”). We might call the instigators of Hashtakah Mashtikim.

Twin Threats to Public Medicare

By Ontario Health Coalition

The threat to the future of Public Medicare in Ontario and across the country is at an all-time high. After passing legislation to privatize hospitals, the United Conservative Party (UCP) – under the leadership of Premier Danielle Smith in Alberta – passed “Bill 11” in December. The new law creates the legal framework to privatize healthcare, ending single-tier Public Medicare as a national project, enabling doctors to charge patients directly for healthcare and bill the public health system at the same time. Central to the plan, the law creates a market of private for-profit health insurance companies. Doctors choose which patients are charged and for what services. If patients can’t pay, they have to try to find a doctor who won’t charge (or wait/go without care). Bottom line: this legislation is the most direct and grievous attack on Public Medicare in Canada since its inception.
