CALLS TO ACTION

Support Migrant Workers

The federal government is proposing changes that will allow employers to take 5-30% of wages from each worker. That’s up to $1,307/month, $15,600/year!

Considering there are over 100,000 migrant food and fishery workers in Canada, that’s over $1.5 billion stolen from some of the most impoverished and exploited people in the country.

While the deductions are supposed to be for shelter, they don’t come with any shelter standards. Instead of implementing enforceable housing rules (promised in 2020), they want to create 12 vague and unenforceable guidelines.

EVENTS

War, Peace, and Law

When: Mondays, August 6 to Sept 8

War and peace are not only political struggles—they are legal constructs that shape global power, foreign and domestic policy, and everyday life. War is prohibited under international law, and numerous constitutions, treaties, and legal systems restrict, renounce, or seek to prevent it. Yet exceptions persist, enforcement is selective, and legal norms are routinely ignored, undermined, or exploited. The result is a world where war is illegal on paper but legitimized and normalized in practice.

The right to housing in Canada

Canada Must Act to End the Genocide in Gaza

By NUPGE

We are witnessing unimaginable suffering in Gaza, as Israel uses starvation as a weapon of war through its blockade and militarized aid system. People in Gaza are dying from malnutrition and hunger-related illnesses. This week, over 100 humanitarian organizations warned of mass starvation in Gaza. Aid workers, health care workers, and journalists cannot do their jobs because they, too, are facing starvation.

Soft Surveillance and Control

By Rezgar Akrawi

Digital corporations, in collaboration with major powers, actively monitor individuals’ movements through smart devices and various communication tools. Virtually all digital activities – including supposedly secure private meetings – are subject to continuous observation and analysis. In reality, there is no digital space that is 100% secure. Data is systematically collected and used to assess and classify individuals and groups based on their behavioral patterns and political or intellectual orientations.

Thinking as a Class

If what we were saying to workers in a workplace was in the 1950s and 60s, you didn’t actually have to think about anybody else. If you were an auto worker, you were probably strong and you could win things for yourself. And what a lot of auto workers learned is we don’t actually need anybody. They didn’t learn that this was a temporary situation.

CUPE Presser: Reinstate Paramedic Katherine Grzejszczak

Paramedic and CUPE Ontario executive board member Katherine Grzejszczak fights for reinstatement to her job. She was fired by York Region for an anti-war comment she made on Facebook. The state of Israel is intensifying the genocide and forced displacement of Palestinians. Despite the Canadian government making condemning statements they continue to send military goods and maintain normal relations with Israel. As workers we must be able to speak freely to organize an end to this horror. We refuse to be silenced and will continue supporting each other.
