CALLS TO ACTION
Petition on Deep Seabed Mining
A Canadian company – The Metals Company – has circumvented international law, the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea, and the authority of the multilateral International Seabed Authority (ISA). Frustrated by not receiving permits through the ISA when it wanted them, The Metals Company has applied for permits to mine the deep seabed in international waters – the Common Heritage of Humankind – through the US government. We believe the Canadian government, as a signatory to UNCLOS, has an obligation to assure that its nationals do not breach international law.

Progressive Vision for AI & Digital Sovereignty
When: July 9th, 6pm
Where: George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre, 245 Church St
The global economy is overly dependent on U.S. tech giants for digital infrastructure, data, and artificial intelligence. U.S. laws and corporate dominance threaten external control over digital systems, putting sovereignty, privacy, and democracy at risk.
Democracies must be free from foreign influence and of profit at the expense of livelihoods. Meanwhile, AI as a tool for the profit of Big Tech companies is used to threaten jobs, undermine public education, healthcare, and public services, and erodes public trust. How do we make digital sovereignty and public, democratically controlled AI for the public good into real nation-building initiatives?

Venezuela: What is True, What is False?
When: July 9th, 8pm
Numa Molina is a Venezuelan Jesuit priest, theologian, journalist, and political commentator whose public life brings together Christian faith, liberation theology, anti-imperialism, and commitment to the Bolivarian Revolution. He was a friend of Pope Francis, Father Miguel d’Escoto, and President Hugo Chávez, and remains a friend of President Nicolás Maduro and of Cuba and Nicaragua. For Molina, politics and theology are inseparable from solidarity with the poor and the struggle for sovereignty; as he has said, “We must live with the poor, as the poor, and from the perspective of the poor.”

It features four pieces of striking analysis, all drawing from Rosenfeld’s decades of experience as an autoworker, educator, and socialist activist.
“These interventions remind us that worker power depends not only on shop-floor solidarity, but on building a capacity for independent collective political action by unions and workers…”
All are invited to join as we celebrate this new entry into the debates on Canadian socialism and working class politics!

Cyprus in the New World Disorder

By Nicos Trimikliniotis and Eren Duzgun
Since 7 October 2023, Cyprus has moved from the margins of Middle Eastern conflict into its operational geography. British bases on the island have supported Israeli and US military activity across the region; the Republic of Cyprus has expanded defence cooperation with the United States, Israel, France, and Greece; and Northern Cyprus has been integrated more deeply into Turkey’s military infrastructure. The March 2026 drone strikes on the island exposed the consequence: Cyprus can no longer host the machinery of regional war while assuming that war will remain elsewhere.
