CALLS TO ACTION

Repeal Bill 60

Doug Ford has already pushed through Bill 60: The Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, but the fight isn’t over. The Province is now seeking public comment on the regulations that will decide just how fast they can kick you out of your home. We have until May 1st to flood their inbox and demand they REPEAL this attack on tenants!

Send a message to the Premier, Housing Minister, and your MPP NOW! This one simple action can make a difference.

Stop privatizing our public hospitals

Tell Premier Doug Ford and your local MPP to stop privatizing our public hospitals and healthcare. That means: stop the private clinics and fund the operating rooms and diagnostics in our public hospitals that are underused, stop forcing the hospitals into cuts, stop privatizing all the healthcare services they are privatizing. It is a simple message:

Email Premier Doug Ford, click on “Issue,” choose whether or not you want a reply, then click “proceed to step 2” and type in your message.

Cuba After Castro

When: June 6th, 4:15pm

Cuba After Castro delivers the definitive portrait of Miguel Díaz-Canel, Cuba’s first leader born after the Revolution. Through this unprecedented in-depth interview we see a vision of revolutionary Cuba suppressed in the west: a nation of collective values and defiance in the face of constant threats from the United States. The film chronicles Diaz-Canel’s formation as an unexpected successor to the Castros — an unassuming organizer molded by the revolutionary process. Confronting a perfect storm of intensified U.S. sanctions, a media war, a devastating pandemic, and historic domestic protests. Díaz-Canel reflects on navigating these existential crises for the nation he has come to lead.

Student Power

When: June 7th, 6pm
Where: Another Story Bookshop, 315 Roncesvalles Ave

As global campus protests attract academic and public attention, interest in student movements continues to grow; however, very little is known about the Canadian context. Lexier’s monograph offers the first detailed history of on-campus activism in Canada. Each chapter draws upon archival documents, media reports, and oral interviews to chronicle major upheavals in, respectively, the Sixties, 1974-2000, and 2000-2020. Grounded in the larger historical, political, economic, social/cultural, and institutional context of the period, each analyzes the various demands and tactics, the internal and external responses, and perceivable outcomes. Together, they demonstrate that student movements regularly anticipate broader social and political developments and, despite ongoing resistance to their confrontational strategies, effectively advance democracy and social justice both on- and off-campus.

Dr. Roberta Lexier is Professor in the Departments of General Education and Humanities at Mount Royal University. She is the coeditor of Party of Conscience: The CCF, the NDP, and Social Democracy in Canada.

Keep Water Public

When: June 11th, 7pm

This meeting is part of CUPE Ontario’s Keep Water Public campaign and is intended for executives of locals representing Regional Water/Wastewater Workers. We recognize there are significant legislative changes happening in Ontario related to the ownership, governance, and delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure and services. Thess include Bill 98 and Bill 100, alongside the creation of Public Water Wastewater Corporations. Despite the name, these changes open the door to increased privatization, fragmentation, and loss of public accountability within Ontario’s water systems.

Devastating Consequences of War Against Iran

By Syndicate of Workers of Tehran Bus Company

A devastating war completely disrupted the lives and struggles of us workers in every conceivable way. From the round-the-clock bombardments by the US and Israel – which made it crystal clear to everyone that “precision strikes,” “military aid,” and “humanitarian interventions” were nothing but a shameful and destructive deception – to the presence of the security and [paramilitary militia] Basij suppressive forces on every street corner. This generated widespread fear, anxiety, and panic among the public over both the bombardments and the severe security crackdowns, compounded by skyrocketing inflation and the unacceptable internet shutdown by the government, which disrupted the work and lives of millions of people. It stripped the vast majority of the public, as well as independent organizations, including our Syndicate (Syndicate of Workers of the Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company), of the ability to communicate and express themselves publicly.

Education Under Siege

Ontario’s higher education sector is at a breaking point. From the systematic marketization of colleges and universities to the sustained attack on labour rights, the provincial government’s strategy is clear: treat education as a commodity rather than a social good. We explore strategies for a labour and community-led response, highlighting ongoing student and labour fightbacks and providing a direct opportunity for attendees to plug into the organizing work necessary to defend, expand, and decommodify our public institutions.

Contesting the Iran War

By Saeed Rahnema

Seventeen years ago, in the wake of the Green Movement’s uprising and its suppression – when Iran had once again drawn the attention of right- and left-wing analysts worldwide – I wrote an article titled “The Tragedy of Left Discourse on Iran,” in which I critiqued the mistaken views of several prominent left theorists, including James Petras, Azmi Bishara, Slavoj Žižek, and contributors to MRZine, the Monthly Review-affiliated website, all of whom had, in various ways, sided with the Islamic Republic.
